GLEN ELLYN – State Senator Laura Ellman recently announced the Village of Glen Ellyn School Districts 41, 89 and 87 will receive a $100,000 Safe Routes to School grant to develop a Community Travel Plan aimed at improving safe biking and walking routes for local students.
“This investment will help Glen Ellyn create safer, more connected routes for students and families walking or biking to school,” said Ellman (D-Naperville). “When communities prioritize safe sidewalks, crossings and transportation planning around schools, we’re not only improving safety, we’re encouraging healthier lifestyles and strengthening neighborhood connections.”
The funding is part of $12 million in statewide grants announced by the Illinois Department of Transportation through the Ellman-supported Safe Routes to School program, which supports projects that make traveling to school safer and more accessible for students and families.
The $100,000 grant will support the development of a Community Travel Plan for Glen Ellyn School Districts 41, 89 and 87, identifying opportunities to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety around schools and encourage active transportation options for students.
Administered by IDOT using federal funding, the Safe Routes to School program supports local projects and educational efforts focused on reducing traffic dangers, improving accessibility and expanding safe walking and biking infrastructure near schools.
“Students and parents should feel confident that getting to school safely does not depend on getting in a car,” said Ellman. “This planning effort will help identify long-term improvements that make it easier and safer for children throughout the community to walk, bike and roll to school.”
The next application period for the Safe Routes to School program is anticipated in 2027. To view a complete list, visit idot.click/srts and click the “Awarded Projects” tab.
