SPRINGFIELD – Following a new report from the Environmental Integrity Project that the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s civil lawsuits against polluters fell to an historic low during the first year of the Trump administration, in addition to major cuts to environmental programs, State Senator Laura Ellman renewed her efforts to ensure that Illinois remains a national leading in protecting air, water and land through Senate Bill 3556.

“When it comes to protecting clean air and water, Illinois must lead, not follow,” said Ellman (D- Naperville). “Our communities deserve strong, science-based environmental protections that reflect our values and safeguard public health.”

Senate Bill 3556 would prevent the Illinois Pollution Control Board from adopting standards that are less stringent than existing state regulations, even if new federal rules weaken environmental protections.

Additionally, the bill would standardize rulemaking language across the Environmental Protection Act, ensuring clarity, consistency and accountability in Illinois’ environmental policy.

“This legislation sends a clear message: Illinois will not lower its environmental standards for anyone,” said Ellman. “Protecting our air, water and land is not just good environmental policy, its good economic and public health policy too.”

Senate Bill 3556 passed the Senate Environment and Conservation Committee on Thursday and heads to the full Senate for further consideration.
